Chapter Eight Discovery

Ahava smiled with amusement. He watched the several squads of elven warriors retreat out of the once-bustling square that had nearly been a battleground. The last of the attacking soldiers had left running like frightened dogs with their tails between their legs.

He looked toward the defenders. They were still behind the large, powerful blue wavy shield. With a mental command, Ahava dropped the magical protection. He saw the expression on the guards’ faces change as the energy dispersed into the aether. The expressions were all of wonder and surprise. This only lasted for a few seconds, then the faces went to an expression of watchfulness again. Soon, with some shouted orders, the soldiers in the shield wall moved out of the defensive wall formation into a rough line.

With a break in the oppressive silence, the square started to return to normal. Now that the magical barrier, and the attacking force, were gone, the rich people from the square’s sides moved back toward the central market. The stall vendors appeared as if from nowhere as they ran back into the market in the hope of increased business. While the vendors arrived, some of the guards surrounding the wealthy patrons of the market ran off. Ahava's head turned as he looked around. Then with quick movements, he pulled his hooded cloak up. This action put his face entirely into the darkness of the hood.

I guess that my simple display of power has stirred up quite the hornet’s nest. Ahava thought as he saw the people start to discuss earnestly what had just happened. But thankfully, nobody seemed to have put two and two together and figured out that it was me doing the magic.

Groups of wealthy individuals looked around the square in interest as they searched for any other unusual displays of magical power. Ahava’s eyes gaze flickered back over to the wedding party, and to his surprise, they all looked as cool as cucumbers. Everybody was back in ordered rows as the couple moved back to the position in front of the woman officiator. The only indication that something had happened was that a few of the men at the back of the assembly looked around the town center as if they were searching for their benefactor.

For a while, as Ahava did not want to call attention to himself, he stayed perfectly still. When the initial excitement had calmed down, he moved toward the park’s backside as he walked around the large central tree that was the magical power within the town.

All the time he had been waiting in the square, the town’s tree had been practically screaming into his mind. Its main message had been to hurry up and come and commune with it. With this voice trying to invade his mind, Ahava slowly moved toward the trees in the center of the gardens. He found that if he didn’t focus on the voice, then it disappeared.

Walking on the soft grass like a well-manicured carpet, Ahava started to walk over the large roots that made up the tree’s root system.
